Emphasis
Emphasis in the principles of design is basically one of the techniques that designers use to help the readers to identify the focal point of the piece. In other words, it is to make a certain element in a design to be more or highly noticeable. Besides, emphasis could be easily be identified by just looking at a piece of design and question yourself what is the first thing you see?, what is the second thing you see?, and what is the third thing you see?. In this cover page of the magazine, the element that is emphasized is surely the circle as it is placed right smack in the middle of the cover.
Besides emphasis, contrast has also a huge role to play in help enhancing a design. This element of the principles of design can be seen when there are two different shapes or colours used in designing a page. For instance, it could be as simple as the different selection of colours used for the text and background. As you can see, the example selected above is able to showcase the element perfectly. In order to create harmony in the design, the designer of this page played with different colours and shapes that would go well together to create contrast to create focus, organize information and of course make the design attractive to the eye.
The third element of the principles of the design, balance basically refers to the distribution of elements in a work of design or art. Balance in a design is not only to attract attention but it is also a principle that keeps all the elements in a page or design are well placed to avoid the design to look chaotic. Apart from that, balance can be categorised into symmetrical and asymmetrical. In this piece of design above, a symmetrical balance can be clearly seen as everything is placed harmoniously.
Alignment is one of the design principles that people usually do not pay much attention on but, i personally feel that this element can be absolutely crucial when it comes to arranging text in a design. For example, the magazine cover above shows a good alignment of text. A good alignment of text helps a design to look more neat and make the text merge or blend into the other elements of the design better.
In my point of view, this element of the design principles basically means the presentation of the design of all elements in the piece as a whole. A good design must be able to merge different elements and make all of them look as a unit. In the example above, the magazine cover is a very good example of having a good flow in a design.
